Young Lions to be exciting

Published December 4, 2009

The Lady Lions of Loganville Christian Academy will be long on heart but short on experience at the varsity level of play this season. However, Gregg Garrett, first-year head coach, said this year’s edition of girls basketball will be interesting to watch.

“We’ll be very scrappy, we’ll score pretty well and we’ll play aggressive defense,” Garrett said.

Garrett said his most experienced player is senior point guard Haley Monda.

“We’ll counting on Haley for her play and her leadership,” Garrett said.

Take Monda out of the mix and three of the remaining four starters have less than 10 minutes varsity experience between them.

Joining Monda will be a trio of juniors and a sophomore. Rebecca Butler, at just under 6 feet tall, will start in the post. Garrett said she has a good touch with the ball and is a good rebounder.

Kelsey Sutton starts at the “four” position and is known as a good shooter and rebounder and gives LCA more size on the inside. Sutton is coming off knee surgery. She was injured early in last season

Lindsey Monteon will start at the “three”, according to her coach. Garrett said she played a good bit on the junior varsity squad last year and is probably the best defensive player of the starting five.

Rounding out the starters is Bethany Daniell, a sophomore, who will play at the “two.” Garrett rates her as a good shooter and good athlete.

A trio of freshmen will also be called on to contribute, including Julie Cheney at the point, who, according to Garrett, “has the most talent and potential of anyone in the program. She’s a good ball handler, shooter and plays great defense – just not a lot of experience at the varsity level.”

Additionally, Charli Garrett and Emily Monda will be counted on to give the Lady Lions quality minutes on the inside.

Garrett said his team set their own goals for the coming season. The goals include wining the region and then the state championship. That’s a tall order for a team that was 14-8 last year but with a largely new set of starters.

“We’ll be a lot better basketball team toward the latter part of the season than we will in the beginning,” Garrett said. “We want to get better every time we go out on the floor and we want be the best we can be in January when it matters.”
