SCBOE gives nod to lower budget total
Published June 14, 2009
SOCIAL CIRCLE — Due to losing state funds and a decreasing millage value, the Social Circle City Schools budget is more than $1 million less than last year’s budget.
The $14.5 million budget, approved unanimously at last week’s Social Circle Board of Education meeting, will retain the same 15.769 millage rate from the previous year’s budget but will see the value of one mil decrease from last year due to dropping property values.
“This year’s budget is $1.2 million less, but the millage rate has not changed,” said Hal Dally, chairman of the SCBOE. “Instead, we’ve cut days and we’ve cut some supplements. The pain has been shared, but everybody still has a job.”
Much of the loss in revenue came through nearly $800,000 in austerity cuts and a similar drop in equalization funds. To balance the loss, the system has cut days worked by custodians to save more than $50,000, cut benefits for school administrators by roughly $30,000 and cut travel and equipment costs across the board.
Despite the cuts, school officials are confident the system will continue to serve the students of the community to the best of everyone’s abilities.
“We haven’t cut any positions,” Dally said. “We have kept our teachers and we believe they are the best any system could have.”
