Devils qualify for playoffs with win
Published November 8, 2009
LOGANVILLE — The Red Devils had no control over what happened between Apalachee and Salem Friday night.
All coach Eric Godfree’s team knew was it needed to beat Winder-Barrow to have any chance of making the Class AAAA playoffs.
The Red Devils easily disposed of their guests from Barrow County, beating the Bulldoggs 57-18 while Apalachee completed an undefeated regular season by topping the Seminoles, 37-14.
Loganville now enters the postseason as the fourth seed from Region 8-AAAA.
The Devils face Region 5 champion and third-ranked Sandy Creek Friday in the first round of the playoffs in Tyrone.
Offensively, the Devils piled up a season-high 520 yards against Winder.
Storm Johnson led the 400-yard ground game with 224 yards on only 10 carries. Junior Mykel Wyyet turned in one of his best performances of the season, netting 80 yards on 10 carries and scoring a pair of touchdowns.
Loganville did not turn the ball over all night.
“I was really happy with how we played,” said Godfree. “The way we moved the football — no turnovers and running to the ball on defense. It’s a good way to go into the playoffs. We needed a game like this.”
Defensively, the Devils held the pass-happy Winder offense to 85 yards on the ground. Junior quarterback Christian Davila turned in a solid performance, however, completing 23 of 26 passes for 232 yards. Trent Demeritte caught 12 of Davila’s throws for 158 yards and two TDs. Davila hit his first 11 passes of the night, but mostly for minimal gains.
After forcing the Doggs (2-8) to kick after failing to pick up a first down to start the game, Loganville quickly got on the scoreboard when Johnson ran 68 yards for a touchdown with 8 minutes, 49 seconds to play in the first quarter. Matt Flynn’s PAT gave the Devils a 7-0 lead and they never trailed.
It was the same story on Winder-Barrow’s second offensive series. Jacob Johnson threw Davila for a 5-yard loss on third-and-7 to force another punt. Aaron Kennedy returned the kick 25 yards to the Winder 47, giving his team good field position again.
A.J. Schmidt connected with Sam Jones for 16 yards and a first down and Johnson followed with an 8-yard scamper and a 12-yard run to put the Devils at the 16. Wyyet then reeled off 11 yards to the 5 and Johnson carried on the next play for the touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
Winder-Barrow got on the scoreboard on the next series on a 53-yard pass from Davila to Demeritte. The two-point try was intercepted by Sam Jones, cutting the Loganville lead to 14-6 with 2:51 left in the first quarter.
The Red Devils put together a strong drive after the ensuing kickoff. Clay Garner made a circus catch of a Schmidt pass for a 44-yard gain to the Winder 12. Wyyet followed with an 11-yard run and then scored from the 1 to put the Devils in front 20-6.
Loganville scored twice more before halftime and took a 34-6 lead into the dressing room at intermission.
Johnson scored from 74 yards away on the second play of the third quarter and the rout was on.
