Monroe teams win twice in tournament

COMMERCE — Monroe Area’s varsity basketball teams each gave good accounts of themselves in last week’s Wing Slingers Classic hosted by East Jackson High School.
Both the Lady Purple Hurricanes and the ’Canes won two of the three games they played.
After dropping a 42-30 decision to Greenbrier in the tourney opener, the Monroe Area girls bounced back to take wins over Johnson of Gainesville (60-44) and West Hall (47-32).
“The Johnson game was easily our best of the three,” said Monroe coach Stephanie Hines-Smith. “We played with more intensity and passion.”
Dee Crawford, who was eventually named to the All-Tournament team, led the Lady ’Canes with a career-high 21 points. Monique Durham scored 12 and A.J. Lawson added 10 points and five rebounds. Kiley Doster led the battle on the boards with seven.
Saturday’s game with West Hall allowed the Monroe girls to exact a measure of revenge. The Lady Spartans beat Hines-Smith’s team in overtime last season, but Monroe Area was better on this particular afternoon. Durham led the way with 12 points and six assists. Lawson and Crawford each scored 10, while Meka Hall grabbed seven rebounds.
The Monroe Area boys topped Greenbrier by 30 points in the opener before dropping a 56-52 decision to Class AAAAA Grayson in a winner’s bracket game.
The Rams built a 44-29 lead with 6 minutes, 51 seconds left in the game, but Monroe Area then went on a 22-6 run to close the gap to 51-50 with :57 to play.
After Grayson’s Javarris Smith hit a jumper to put his team up 53-50, coach Ron Garren’s Hurricanes had two good looks at the basket without converting.
“Even though we had a good run in the fourth quarter, we hurt ourselves by going 6-for-11 from the free-throw line during the period and 9-for-17 for the game,” said Garren. “Instead of executing our half-court offense, we took the first available shot after Grayson scored. We have to be more patient.”
Ken Jackson led Monroe Area with 16 points and Maritea Duke had 12. Devonte Jarrell hit two three-pointers during the fourth-quarter spurt.
The Hurricanes came back on Saturday’s afternoon to capture third place in the event with a 92-67 win over Pace Academy. Six Monroe players scored in double figures, led by Stephon Tuitt with 20 points.
“We continue to play well as a team,” said Garren. “The willingness to share the ball will make it difficult for our opponents to defend us.”
