Walton students raise bar on writing tests
Published December 16, 2009
Walton County students sure know how to write.
That’s the message sent by the recent release of scores on the Georgia High School Writing Test for Walton County students, where schools saw the best numbers on the test yet.
“We are very pleased with our scores,” said Louise Hutchens, testing coordinator for Walton County Public Schools. “Our performance exceeded the state for the third consecutive year.”
Walton County schools saw a 94 percent pass rate on the writing test, higher than both the state pass rate of 91 percent and the region pass rate of 90 percent. Social Circle City Schools notched an 88 percent passing rate on the test, which is mandated by the state for all 11th graders.
Even broken down between high schools, the numbers are still impressive, with Loganville High School seeing a 98 percent pass rate, Monroe Area High School a 90 percent pass rate and Walnut Grove High School a 91 percent pass rate.
“Our performance is exemplary, and the achievement gaps continue to close,” Hutchens said, noting the racial achievement gap decreased by 55 percent. “This is a testament to the hard work of our teachers and students.”
Both systems saw increases in exemplary performances, with six of the eight subgroups seeing increases on the test in Walton, while 5 percent of Social Circle students achieved an exemplary score.
“Writing across the curriculum will be a continued emphasis in grades K through 12 as the district strives for continuous improvement,” said Barbara Wright, director of administrative services for the Social Circle system.
