Drag strip proposal put off until February
Published January 6, 2010
It will be another month before the full Social Circle Planning Commission will consider the newest changes to the proposed drag strip complex on 1-20.
City Manager Doug White said the commission is still researching the issue, including independent research on similar race tracks and a proposed trip to the similar drag strip in Eatonton.
“I don’t know when that meeting will be,” White said.
Donnie Clack, whose Little River Ventures is planning the drag strip and entertainment complex, said there are still issues to be ironed out before the commission.
“We’re working on conditions of hours of operations, decibel levels and the like,” Clack said. ‘We’re checking to see what the industry standards are nationwide.”
The drag strip plans resulted in controversy when presented to the Social Circle City Council last month, with more than 100 people coming out in both support and opposition to the business.
“The drag strip is what caught everybody’s attention,” Clack said. “But we’ll also have a covered auditorium for concerts, horse shows, dog shows, local events and more. It’s not just a drag strip.”
Clack said he’s willing to discuss his full intentions on the entertainment complex with anyone, including those in opposition due to noise and safety concerns.
“I think it can help jumpstart the local economy,” Clack said.
The Planning Commission will announce a time and date for a public meeting later this month but is not expected to meet until February.
