SANDY SPRINGS — The Social Circle Redskins fell 34-7 Friday night on the road against Holy Innocents’, ending their season.
Social Circle had a solid first half, keeping the score within seven points, but the Golden Bears’ ground game would prove to be too much for the Redskins to contain.
The playoffs lasted only one game for Social Circle despite high hopes this summer. After the game, coach Troy Morris asked his seniors to come forward.
“I’m proud of you,” he said. “I have loved coaching for you and I hate to lose you.”
Morris pointed out his team had a strong first half, but it was the Golden Bears’ conditioning that put them over the top.
“I was proud of you that first half. You fought, fought and fought. But that was a strong team. They live in the weight room,” Morris said.
The Golden Bears first drive of the game started off on the right foot following a 61-yard Harrison Andros return to the Social Circle 11-yard line. Three plays later, Wills Aitkens took a handoff and ran 3 yards up the middle for the score. Clint Dolan’s kick was good and Holy Innocents’ took an early 7-0 lead with less than two minutes into the first quarter.
Social Circle’s opening drive was kept alive by a hard count on fourth-and-2 by quarterback Devaris Pitts, giving the Redskins a first down at their own 43. The tactic went for naught as the ’Skins ended up punting the ball, giving the Golden Bears the ball on their 12.
Following five first downs, Redskin Jeremy Wyatt intercepted a Will Allen pass, taking the ball to the Holy Innocents’ 29. Six plays later, Wyatt found the end zone on a 1-yard play on the first play of the second quarter. With the Greg Paulus kick, the score was tied at 7-apiece with 11:54 left in the first half.
The Golden Bears’ next drive went 55 yards on three plays, capped off by an Aitkens 45-yard touchdown run. The Dolan kick was good, making it 14-7 Holy Innocents’.
Social Circle failed to answer on its ensuing drive when, on fourth-and-3, runner Christopher Burns failed to move the chains.
Holy Innocents’ drove all the way to the Redskin 10-yard line, highlighted by a 47-yard pass from Allen to wideout Jordan Miller. But, Chase Lackey tackled a Golden Bear rushing on the 1, knocking the ball loose and recovering the fumble.
Social Circle managed to gain 56 yards before a Pitts interception by Jordan Garrett halted the offensive drive.
The teams went into the locker room with the score 14-7.
Social Circle started the second half with the ball but was forced to punt.
From their own 24, Holy Innocents’ drove the length of the field, capped off by an Allen 12-yard touchdown run. The Dolan kick was good, and with 5:54 left in the third quarter, the Golden Bears were up 21-7.
After a penalty-laden drive, the ’Skins were forced to punt the ball and Aitkens returned the Jarrett Farmer punt for a score. Dolan’s kick was true again, putting the Golden Bears up 28-7.
Social Circle’s next drive ended when Pitts’ pass was intercepted by Allen at the Social Circle 17 with 1:23 left in the third. The Redskins managed to recover a Holy Innocents’ fumble but went four-and-out on their next drive.
Golden Bears rusher CJ James ran 32 yards to the end zone on the first play from scrimmage, scoring the game’s final points after a failed extra point.
Faced with a fourth-and-34, the Redskins punted the ball on their ensuing drive and with 4:53 left in the game, Holy Innocents’ ran out the clock and ended the Social Circle Redskins’ season.
