Defense holds, Redskins win 36-28
Published October 25, 2009
BOGART — Social Circle kept their hopes of being a No. 2 seed in the Region 8-A alive by beating Prince Avenue Christian School 36-28 Friday.
“You’re playing like a playoff team right now,” head coach Troy Morris told his players after the game. “The question is, are we a two seed or a four seed? We’re going to come back and work our tails off.”
The Redskins played their type of game, mixing runs from Christopher Burns, Marvae Crawford, Jeremy Wyatt and Randy Paulus with timely passes from Devaris Pitts.
The Social Circle defense managed to contain the running attack of Prince Avenue’s Bobo Marshall, Travis Clark and Taylor Clark when it had to.
Social Circle defender Levi McCarty sacked Taylor Clark once and shared another.
But, as has been the case this season, Social Circle started flat, allowing the Wolverines to score on their first drive on a Taylor Clark 5-yard run with less than three minutes off the clock in the first quarter.
The kick was no good, making the score Prince Avenue 6, Social Circle 0.
The Redskins converted a fourth-and-1 on their first drive on a fake punt, which went 11 yards for Crawford. The drive stalled on the Wolverines 14, however, and Prince Avenue looked to be in business. But a fumble by Marshall gave the Redskins the ball on their own 38.
After a 37-yard run by Wyatt, the Redskins were faced with a fourth-and-9 from the Prince Avenue 14 when Pitts pumped once and then threw a 14-yard strike to Crawford.
Paulus’ kick was good, putting the Redskins up 7-6 with 11:48 left to play in the half.
Prince Avenue looked poised to come right back, but Taylor Clark’s pass was intercepted by Social Circle’s Renaldo Burke.
On the next play, Pitts’ pass was picked off by Wolverine Felipe Howell.
Prince Avenue took four plays to drive 42 yards on its next scoring drive. Marshall ran 5 yards and Taylor Clark added the 2-point conversion, giving the Wolverines a 14-7 lead with 4:07 left in the half.
Social Circle started its next drive on the Prince Avenue 28 and ran the ball eight straight times to the end zone on a Paulus 5-yard scoring run. His kick was good, knotting the game at 14 with :56 seconds left in the half.
On Social Circle’s opening drive of the second half, Burns fumbled the ball giving Prince Avenue the ball on the Redskins’ 45.
Four plays later, Clark was back in the end zone, this time from 5 yards out. He then ran the 2-point conversion in, putting the Wolverines up 22-14 with 9:52 left in the third quarter.
After a 44-yard return by Wyatt gave the Redskins the ball on the Prince Avenue 46, Paulus ran for his second score of the night from 13 yards out. Crawford added two points on the conversion and the score was tied once again, this time at 22 with 8:45 left in the third quarter.
The Redskins defense stiffened on the Wolverines’ next drive, forcing a punt which sailed out of the end zone.
Social Circle ran the ball eight straight times, earning four first downs.
Pitts kept the ball himself from the 6-yard line for the score. Paulus hit the extra point, putting Social Circle up 29-22 with 1:12 left in the third quarter.
The Wolverines mounted a 70-yard 14-play drive which led to another Clark touchdown run. However, the 2-point conversion to take the lead failed and the Redskins had a 29-28 advantage with 6:17 left to play in the game.
But Social Circle mounted a long, clock-eating drive of its own, going 71 yards in just under five minutes, capped off by a 4-yard Crawford run.
Paulus’ kick was good, giving the Redskins a 36-28 lead with 1:24 left in the game.
Prince Avenue managed to get to the Social Circle 48 but could not convert a fourth-and-17.
Social Circle kneeled on the ball for the victory.
