’Canes top Greenbrier in opener

Published November 25, 2009

COMMERCE — Stephon Tuitt, a 6-foot, 6-inch sophomore, made his varsity basketball debut Saturday to rave reviews. Tuitt tallied a game-high 19 points, pulled down 21 rebounds and blocked four shots to help lead Monroe Area to a 75-45 win over previously unbeaten (3-1) Greenbrier in the opening round of the Wing Slingers Tipoff Classic at East Jackson High School.

Three other Purple Hurricanes also finished in double digits, including Maritea Duke with 13 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Ken Jackson and A.J. Capers added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Demond Smith finished with nine.

The Monroe Area girls weren’t fortunate, dropping a 42-30 decision to Class AAAAA Greenbrier. The Lady ’Canes were their own worst enemies with 22 turnovers.

The tournament ends Saturday. The Monroe girls play at 12:30 p.m. and the boys at 5:30 p.m.

“I was pleased with the team effort we had,” said Garren. “We really shared the basketball and that made me happy. We didn’t have a lot of individual plays even though we have plenty of kids who are capable of that.”

Garren said Tuitt’s presence allows the 6-4 Duke to move out to the perimeter and free up last season's leading scorer for the mid-range jumper.

“It gives us the ability to have two different looks,” Garren said. “When Stephon is in the game we’re pretty big, but we can also go smaller with some of our quicker guards.”

The coach also commended Capers from successfully coming back from a variety of injuries that basically rendered him ineffective all of last season.

Th ’Canes were scheduled to play Grayson Monday in a winner’s bracket contest. Look for details in Sunday’s paper.

As for the Lady ’Canes, Kiley Doster led the way with 11 points and Jasmine Scott added six. Dee Crawford ended the afternoon with nine rebounds.

“I was disappointed in our effort as far as turnovers,” said MAHS coach Stephanie Hines-Smith. “We weren’t as focused as we needed to be and that led to far too many mental mistakes.”
