Hearn a ‘superstar’ for club

Published December 16, 2009

MONROE — George Hearn is a superstar for the children of Walton County.

Hearn, a retired juvenile court judge, was recognized recently with the Superstar Award presented by the local Boys & Girls Club.

He “has touched probably more juvenile lives than anybody alive in this county,” said Hal Breedlove, who presented the award at a Dec. 4 banquet.

“He’s dedicated his whole life to kids and family,” Breedlove said.

In addition to his work as a judge, Hearn has been a Sunday school teacher, youth football coach, Officer Candidate School leader and family law attorney. He also helped secure funding to make the Boys & Girls Club a reality in Walton County.

Hearn’s award came at the end of a night that saw children from Boys & Girls Clubs in Social Circle and Monroe show off their talent and thank those who support the program.

“Tonight, it’s obvious that the dream has been fulfilled,” Hearn said. “This Boys & Girls Club has been one of the best things ever to happen to Walton County.”

Two local businesses also were honored for their work to promote the Boys & Girls Club and support its programs.

Officials with the Boys & Girls Club recognized Social Circle Ace Home Center and Walton EMC for generosity. Both businesses received the Shining Star awards.

Rebecca Dally, a Social Circle lawye and a vice president of the local Boys & Girls Club Executive Committee, said Social Circle Ace Home Center is the “go-to business” in town.

“They believe in the Boys & Girls Club,” she said. “They’ve always helped us out. They never say no.

“The owner and employees of that business have been a lifeline to our club.”

Nancy Kinsey said Walton EMC dates to 1936 and has a proud history of supporting the community, including the Boys & Girls Club.

“I don’t think a year’s gone by that the organization has not donated money to help our young folks,” said Kinsey, who also is a vice president on the executive committee and serves as executive director of the Development Authority of Walton County.

Other winners included Carla Soriano and Wesley Reed for the Rising Star award as youths of the year.

Soriano is a Social Circle High School junior, and Reed is a senior at Monroe Area High School.

Soriano “has been a helping hand by participating in several service projects in her community,” said Krystal Williams, of the Social Circle Boys & Girls Club.

Melanie Unchuan, of the Monroe branch, had similar praise for Reed.

“He doesn’t come to play games or play sports,” she said. “He actually volunteers.”

Winners of the Guiding Star awards were St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, for its support of the John P. and Joyce C. Stephens Club in Monroe, and parents of the Social Circle Boys & Girls Club children.

“This awards dinner was to showcase businesses and individuals who so graciously support our organization,” Kinsey said.

“While the main purpose was an awards dinner, it was also a fundraiser to help with the many programs at the clubs.

“A special thanks goes to everyone who purchased a table or tickets to the event.”

Kinsey expressed special thanks to LongHorn Steakhouse, Quality Foods, the Wal-Mart Distribution Center and First Baptist Church, which was host of the banquet.
