Local faces racketeering charges

Published January 29, 2010

A Loganville man and one-time business development manager of the former Community Bank in Grayson is one of three men charged with theft and violation of the state Racketeering Act in connection with a $3 million theft from the Glock gun manufacturing company.

Jerry Walker Chapman, 62, of 945 Old Loganville Road, Loganville, was arrested by Cobb County authorities last week and charged with 10 counts of theft by taking from 2001 to 2003.

He was also charged with one count of violating the Georgia RICO Act arising from an incident in May 2000. The other two men charged along with Chapman were James Harper III, a former federal prosecutor, and Jeffrey Pombert.

According to the indictment, the three men were part of a team hired by Glock Inc. in 2000 to look into suspected wrongdoing by a former high-ranking Glock associate.

In August 2008, Chapman was arrested by Gwinnett County authorities and charged with attempted extortion in connection with the case. At that time, a Gwinnett County assistant district attorney said Chapman was alleged to have written a letter to Gaston Glock, owner of Glock Inc., claiming to have information he would disclose if he didn’t receive a large sum of money. Glock, an Austrian, is the founder of Glock Inc., a large gun manufacturing company with a Georgia office in Cobb County.

Chapman had allegedly been charged in Gwinnett County where the letter allegedly originated and the charge was only attempted extortion since no actual extortion took place. The representative from the Gwinnett DA’s office said it had come to light during a larger investigation involving the president of the international Glock Corporation. Authorities at the Gwinnett County DA’s office could not be reached for comment.

All three men have been released on $100,000 bond each.
