MONROE — An Alabama man is dead and a local resident in jail after an incident Friday night that ended in the city’s first murder of the year.
Paris Leroy Johnson, 26, of 755 Ridge Road, Monroe, remains in Walton County Jail and has been charged with aggravated battery and murder after allegedly striking Antonio Durant Milton, 22, of Thomasville, Ala., in the head repeatedly with a baseball bat.
According to Monroe Police Department investigators, Milton went to Johnson’s house about 9 p.m. last Friday to check on a female friend. The two had brief conversations twice while Milton remained outside and talked with his female friend.
During the last conversation, Milton asked Johnson for a cigarette. Johnson said he did not have one, returned inside his house, came back outside with a baseball bat and allegedly struck Milton several times in the head.
“Paris then went back inside, then came out and dragged the victim’s body from the parking lot in front of his house about 10 feet toward a curb and wooded area nearby,” said Sgt. John Fitzmeyer, lead investigator on the case.
According to reports, 911 was not called for another 10 to 15 minutes, until Milton’s female friend could leave Johnson’s house because she did not have a cell phone.
When emergency medical services arrived on the scene, Milton was breathing but unresponsive. He was taken to Walton Regional Medical Center, where he was stabilized before being transported to Athens Regional Medical Center. He died from his injuries Sunday afternoon.
Johnson was arrested about an hour after the incident at his home. He has a criminal history and was on probation for felony possession of marijuana.
