Loganville bank robbery foiled
Published June 10, 2009
LOGANVILLE — An attempted armed robbery at the Bank of America Friday was foiled before the perpetrator could get his hands on any money.
According to Maj. Dick Lowry, deputy chief of the Loganville Police Department, it was the calm actions of a teller that resulted in police arriving at the bank and arresting Kenneth Dorman Atha, 64, of 350 Randy Road, Loganville, without anyone getting hurt or any money even changing hands.
“He approached her, told her he had a gun and said he wanted the money. She basically said she would get back to him and phoned 9-1-1,” Lowry said. “The police were there within a couple of minutes. She stayed calm the whole time — she did an excellent job.”
According to the police report, when the police arrived and realized the subject had a gun, they “took him to the ground” and pushed the handgun away from him.
The bank was then secured and the subject taken into custody. Atha, who authorities said didn’t have a prior criminal history, remains in Gwinnett County Jail without bond facing one charge of criminal attempt to commit a crime and one count of possession of a weapon during a crime. Lowry said the agent on the scene from the Federal Bureau of Investigations said it was the fourth bank robbery he had worked that day.
“He said they are seeing more and more robberies where it is a first-time offense,” Lowry said.
