Monroe approves $48.3M budget
Published December 16, 2009
MONROE — When Greg Thompson was running for mayor earlier this year, one strength of his he pointed to was maintaining city services and jobs in light of the nationwide economic downfall.
On Tuesday, the Council approved a $48.3 million budget, a figure that is more than $1 million less than last year’s budget, but still without cuts to services and jobs, city officials said.
This year, 12 jobs were frozen. However, one of those positions will be filled with the re-instatement of the city marshal’s post. Two positions in the Monroe Police Department will be funded by federal grants. Four city workers opted for an early retirement incentive package; three of those positions have not been filled.
The utilities budget has dropped nearly $2 million to $34.07 million. About $1 million will be lost after the county did not renegotiate its water service contract with the city. Another $1 million in revenue will not be recouped because of the sale of the city’s Oconee County gas pipeline.
