Standoff over foreclosure leads to arrest
Published February 10, 2010
A standoff prompted by a foreclosure notice lasted only a few hours last week before Ronald G. Burdett surrendered to officers peacefully.
According to Walton County Sheriff’s Office officials, the incident arose while an eviction notice was being served at 3014 Spring Court, Loganville, about 8:45 a.m. Thursday. Officials with Atlanta-based Eviction Services Inc. informed law enforcement personnel the homeowner was on location and was reportedly armed.
WCSO personnel arrived on the scene and spoke with Burdett’s wife, who said she noticed odd behavior, including telling her she “did not need to be there today and she needed to leave,” according to reports. Burdett’s wife was described as being “extremely upset, crying and visibly shaken by the situation.”
She found out hours before the standoff their house was being foreclosed on, according to reports.
WCSO deputies set up a perimeter around the house and soon spoke with Burdett by phone. After some time had passed, the Burdett’s pastor arrived on the scene to assist law enforcement officials with the situation. According to reports, law enforcement officials learned Burdett was allegedly addicted to methamphetamine and there was a gun safe in the house with multiple unknown firearms inside.
The pastor and WCSO personnel were able to talk Burdett into surrendering safely without incident. He was taken into custody and transported to Walton Regional Medical Center for a mental health evaluation. The incident remains under investigation though no charges have been filed at this time.
