More than $7 million in marijuana seized

Published November 8, 2009

A door accidentally left open at a residence off Troy Smith Road resulted in the seizure of more than $7.4 million worth of marijuana Wednesday.

The home had in its basement a marijuana grow operation similar to those broken up by law enforcement officials in 2007.

According to Walton County Narcotics Task Force officials, a sheriff’s deputy conducting neighborhood patrols was traveling along Troy Smith Road when he noticed the back door of a residence open. The deputy pulled into the neighborhood and stopped at 204 River Landing Drive. According to reports, when the deputy arrived at the home, the back door had been closed. The deputy did a preliminary investigation of the property, knocking on the door and noticing lights were on as well as a TV but no answer at the door. The deputy then reportedly smelled a faint odor of marijuana coming from the residence.

Task Force members who were nearby arrived on the scene and reported a “strong smell of marijuana” coming from the residence.

A search warrant was executed on the premises and deputies found Quang Hung Le, 28, who was trying to flee from the garage in his vehicle, according to reports. The suspect remains in the county jail on charges of felony obstruction, cultivation of marijuana and trafficking of marijuana.

Seized at the home were 777 marijuana plants as well as lights and other equipment serving as an elaborate growing operation.

The investigation is considered ongoing as the Task Force works with the DEA, though officials did not believe this operation had a direct link to previous grow house operations.

The Walton County Narcotics Task Force is comprised of officers from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and the Monroe Police Department who work in conjunction with other state and federal law enforcement agencies and focus on making arrests related to drug activity in the county.
