Reward offered for info on old MES arson
Published June 21, 2009
MONROE — The fire department is turning to the public for help in making an arrest in the fire earlier this month at the old Monroe Elementary School.
Local and state fire investigators have found little evidence to identify those responsible for the fire in the now vacant school’s gymnasium. Georgia Arson Control Inc. offers a reward of up to $10,000 to those who give information leading to the arrest and conviction of an arsonist.
“While damaging public property is frustrating, what this is really about is safety,” said arson investigator Joe Page. “If these people are not stopped, someone is going to end up getting hurt or killed.”
The fire reportedly started around 6 p.m. on June 1 at the Bold Springs Avenue school’s gymnasium. The fire damaged the floor of the gym and brand new mats being stored at the school for the Walnut Grove High School wrestling program. In addition to damage caused by the fire, smoke damage throughout the facility is extensive, according to officials.
Since its closing in 2007, the school has repeatedly been the target of vandals who have broken into the facility on several occasions, started small fires, pulled fire alarms and damaged property.
In the past five years, several citizens of Monroe and Walton County have benefited from the monies offered by Georgia Arson by providing information to arson investigators. The City of Monroe Fire Department is asking anyone with information about the fire to contact 770-267-4446.
