A rough week for George Walton girls

Published January 27, 2010

The George Walton Academy girls picked a bad week to have a bad week.

After having started the new year with six straight wins, the Lady Bulldogs lost two of three games last week, including an especially ugly setback that knocked them out of sole possession of first place in the region.

The GWA girls will hit the road this week for three straight away games in hopes of regrouping and rebounding. They were scheduled to meet The Weber School Monday, Holy Spirit Prep Tuesday and will face Atlanta Girls School Friday.

“We haven't had much success the past two years, so maybe we didn't know how to handle it,” said girls coach Lori Hines. “We've just got to go out and refocus and turn things around.”

After winning just 12 games last season, the Lady Bulldogs were 15-4 overall (8-1 in the region) heading into this week. But they reverted to last year's form in an 18-16 loss to Dominion Christian last Thursday. They led 10-6 at the half, but managed just six points over the final two quarters.

“They ran a zone and we just couldn't pass the ball or get into any kind of rhythm,” Hines said. “But they couldn't do much against us either.”

The difference was a last-second layup that gave Dominion its only lead of the game.

It also gave the Lady Knights a share of first place in Region 1-AAA. GWA won their earlier meeting 41-28.

The Lady Bulldogs returned to the Nicholson Center for their final regular season home Saturday and lost to Tattnall-Square for the second time this season 52-41.

Trailing 29-24 at halftime, GWA went on an 8-1 run to start the third quarter and take its first lead of the game 32-30. But the Lady Trojans scored eight unanswered points to close out the period and go ahead for good. Bre Atkism led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points.

Before the start of the two-game skid, the Lady Dogs cruised past Pinecrest Academy 68-37 behind a season-high 16 points from Marren Schwartz and 10 from Brittany Brooks.
