House open to ‘trickers’
Published October 30, 2009
Trick-or-treaters visiting 430 Yearling Drive in Loganville after dark Saturday are in for a ghoulish Halloween treat, courtesy of the Green family.
For a second year, they have converted the front yard and driveway of their house into an intricate maze of macabre and gruesome scenes that rival any haunted house on the local Halloween circuit.
“It is our favorite holiday and we just love doing it for the children,” said DeeDee Green. “My husband (Jim) is a builder and he enjoys doing it. This year it is even bigger than last year.”
Green said last year children began lining up at about 5 p.m. The front yard has been converted into a graveyard and the undercover maze in the driveway has several scenes designed to frighten even the coolest kid on the block.
“We warn the parents of the younger kids they might want to go through it with them,” Green said. “But any kids 10 or older have to go through it if they want candy.”
Green said the response from neighbors is mixed — some really pleased to have it in the neighborhood for the children and others maybe not so happy with the crowds it draws. One of the residents in Huntington Ridge, Barbara Kerry, wrote to The Tribune to say how much she appreciated what the Greens were doing for the neighborhood.
“Every year they donate their own time and money to build this haunted house for the kids,” Kerry wrote, ending with “Thank you 430 Yearling Drive. Thank you for the memories.”
Green said it cost them about $600 if you take into account the timber and materials for the house and the $200 she expects to lay out for the candy, but she really enjoys the response from the community.
Christopher Green, 9, and his sister Peyton, 3, love the Halloween season and really get into the fun of it all.
Green said they only operate the haunted house on Oct. 31 and will start taking trick or treaters through it after dark.
Before that, residents can take the little ones from second-grade and younger to the Twelfth Annual Trick-or-Treat on Main Street in Loganville set to run from 4 to 6 p.m. Local merchants and civic organizations will hand out treats to children and there will also be a hayride and other treats.
