Halloween events abound in area

Published October 28, 2009

The merger of All Saints Day and Samhain is upon us (for those who do not know, the origins of Halloween trace back to these Christian and Celtic festivals).

This was the first year we (by “we” I mean my wife dragged me along) shopped for a Halloween costume for our son, Noah. He will be a firefighter for his first real trick-or-treating experience because, well, it is a good costume but also because a lot of the costumes out there were, well, how can I put this delicately, lame.

I was perhaps one of the laziest trick-or-treaters growing up – I was a soccer player for at least a decade. Far stretch for someone who played the sport for 20-plus years. And though I have avoided it for many years, I will be donning a costume this year as I dress up as a surgeon or doctor or something. Basically, I will put on some scrubs and put some red liquid on it for that whole blood appeal.

Before I take my son to canvass the neighborhood on Halloween, my wife and I are planning to visit the trick-or-treating event taking place in downtown Loganville. From 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, the 12th annual Trick or Treat on Main Street will be taking place. Local merchants and civic organizations will hand out treats to children from second grade and younger. It will also afford my wife another opportunity to show off our son in his fireman outfit.

While you are out in the Loganville area, stop by 430 Yearling Drive. I have been told it would be frightful to miss this free experience quaintly entitled “Castle Chaos.” I am thinking Noah may be a little to young for it – but those of you who are older might not want to miss the third year of this haunted house.

For those of you in the Social Circle area, or those of you who might just be history buffs who aren’t scared of the dark, I would encourage you to let Union soldier Maj. Best take you on a tour of the Social Circle Cemetery. Though it isn’t billed as a scary event, you will be in a cemetery at night, so keep that in mind. But the tour will highlight some of the “spirits” in the graveyard and some local lore.

While in the area, stop by and see the decorations set up at 326 W. Hightower Trail in Social Circle. I love when people get into the holidays like this, though I would never let my wife do so. Not sure how overboard she would go!

In Monroe, the Tiny Tots parade will be from 4 to 6 p.m. in the downtown area. Then there is the always interesting Halloween Extravaganza at the Lighthouse World Outreach Center. Talk about marketing at its best – doors open at 6 p.m. and close at 6:40 p.m. and won’t re-open until after the blacklight program.

There is a lot going on this weekend, so find some time to get out and enjoy the Halloween experience. Don’t forget to enjoy the classic experience of seeing the Garfield and Peanuts Halloween shows. And for everyone, please be cautious Saturday night as there will be a noticeable increase in the foot traffic along all roads. Be safe and have a happy Halloween!
