Postseason begins for GWA

Published November 4, 2009

The farewell tour moves into sudden death beginning Friday as fifth-ranked George Walton Academy opens post-season play at home against Southland Academy of Americus.

In what will likely be the Bulldogs’ final home football game as a member of the Georgia Independent School Association, GWA (7-3) begins pursuit of its fourth Georgia Independent School Association state title before moving on to the Georgia High School Association next fall.

Expect an old-fashioned slugfest between two ground-oriented teams with stingy defenses. The Bulldogs are giving up just 11 points a game while the Golden Raiders have recorded two shutouts and have surrendered just 15 points a game.

Southland (4-5) held second-ranked Westfield and third-ranked Tattnall-Square to a total of 21 points.

“They are big and strong on defense, and of course, we like to run between the tackles,” said GWA head coach Don Williams. “We may have to go more outside.”

Unlike years past, the Bulldogs don’t have a big, burly fullback type to get the extra yards inside. Instead, they have a pair of speedy halfbacks who can score from anywhere on the field.

Junior running backs Justin Brown and Eric Dobbs supply the big-play threat for the Bulldogs. In the regular season finale last Friday, both runners went over 100 yards despite combining for just 16 rushes.

“We have a little more speed this year,” Williams said. “I hope that give us a little bit of an edge.”
