Girl sets up clothing drive for Haiti

Published February 3, 2010

Eight-year-old Jazmine Fick has never been to Haiti, but she is helping those affected by the devastating earthquake there last month.

Fick, a home-schooled student from Social Circle, started a clothing drive to help those in the ravished country, calling for donations from those in Social Circle and beyond.

“I wanted to start the clothes drive because the people over there lost everything,” she said.

So far, the drive has been successful her mother Anita said.

The clothes will be sent to the Lashbrook Family Ministry International Children’s home in Port-de-Paix, Haiti located about 80 miles outside of the devastation area. The ministry is helping refugees that have come to their area with food, clothing and medicine, Anita said. The missionary has a church, school, boy’s home and other locations in Port-de-Paix.

“We’re accepting clothes donations any size, style and type,” Anita said. “They are in urgent need of boys clothes of all sizes and twin size bed linens.

“All donations will be sent to Miami, Florida, where Globe International will add them to a 20-foot container that’s being sent directly to the Lashbrook Family.”

Anita said monetary donations are also needed to pay for shipping.

“We have teamed up with Turn 2 Ministries from Living Word Worship Center in Jefferson,” Anita said. “James Weaver of Turn 2 has donated his truck, trailer and time to take all our donations to Miami.”

Collections will be taken until Feb. 12. The clothes will be shipped to Miami before being sent to Haiti Feb. 14.

Drop off points are located at:

•Social Circle Christian Learning Center

•Social Circle Fire Department

•Social Circle City Hall

•Boys & Girls Club of Social Circle

•Crossroads Baptist Church

If anyone is interested in volunteering, contact Anita Fick at 770-464-4999 or afick25(at)att.net. There is a need to help pack boxes for shipment and collecting donations throughout the collection time.

“We also need help raising the funds to ship all the donations to the storage/container site in Miami,” Anita said. “Our most urgent need other than the clothes donations is monetary donations to fund Mr. Weaver’s trip to Miami. We are expecting his food, fuel, and lodging expenses to total approximately $600 to $800.”

Any additional moneys raised will be donated to Globe International for the shipping of the container. Any clothes donations that cannot be used in Haiti, such as thick winter clothing, will be donated to Turn 2 Ministries.
