Redskins drop key region game 42-14
Published November 1, 2009
SOCIAL CIRCLE — The Redskins’ hopes of a first-round home playoff game were erased Friday as they fell to Region 8-A foe Commerce 42-14.
Had it won, Social Circle (4-5 overall, 3-2 Region 8-A) would have been in line for a second seed in the state playoffs, but it was not to be as the Redskins never got out of first gear against an aggressive Tiger offense and defense.
“I didn’t expect it,” Social Circle head coach Troy Morris said following the game. “Fortunately we’re in the playoffs, fighting for three or four. Last time we lost like that was against Weslyan, but we bounced back.
“We’ll come back Monday and get to work. We have to.”
The wind was sucked out of Social Circle’s sails on its first drive as Davaris Pitts’ first pass of the game was returned 55 yards by Tiger defender Jesse Savage with just over three minutes gone in the game. Josh Streetman hit the point-after try, putting Commerce up 7-0 early.
The Redskins’ next drive was killed when Pitts was stopped on fourth-and-1 from their own 39.
Commerce converted three first downs before scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run by quartback Cody Streetman with 2:59 left in the first quarter.
Social Circle’s next drive started off promising with a 10-yard run on first down by Christopher Burns, but the Redskins were forced to punt three plays later.
Commerce, starting at its own 20, marched 80 yards on 13 plays, capped off by a 16-yard Deon Brock run.
Josh Streetman kicked the PAT through the uprights with 5:52 left in the half, making the score 21-0 Commerce.
The Redskins were unable to get anything going on their next drive, punting the ball to the Commerce 42.
After a Cody Streetman pass to Jon Cash for 32 yards, Cody Streetman took it himself from 16 yards out and with the Josh Streetman kick, the Redskins were in a 28-0 hole with 4:02 left to play in the half.
Social Circle fought back, starting a Burns kickoff return to the Commerce 42.
One first down, and four plays later, Pitts run for a 2-yard score.
Randy Paulus’ kick was good, getting the Redskins on the board with 1:45 left in the half — the score 28-7 Commerce.
But Commerce drove 63 yards for a late score, a 20-yard Cody Streetman pass to Cash.
With the Josh Streetman kick, Commerce went up 35-7, the score at halftime.
Social Circle stopped Commerce in its first drive of the second half, stopping the Tigers on a fourth-and-6 run.
The Redskins started their drive from their own 33, moving inside the Commerce 20.
But on a fourth-and-1 from the 13, Pitts was stuffed, ending the Social Circle threat.
Commerce’s next drive consisted of 10 straight run eating up 77 yards and the clock well into the fourth quarter.
Cash took the hand-off from 3 yards out and with the Josh Streetman kick, Commerce went up 42-7 with 8:10 to play in the game.
Social Circle failed to convert a fourth-and-14 ending its next drive.
Commerce set up shop at the Social Circle 23 and went 14 yards before Redskins defender Chris Peters recovered a Tiger fumble on the Commerce 45.
Social Circle’s seven-play drive was completed when Pitts threw a 12-yard pass to Marvae Crawford with :33.7 left in the game.
Paulus hit the PAT, making the score 42-14.
An onside kick attempt by the Redskins failed and Commerce ran out the clock.
The Redskins travel to Athens Academy next week. The winner is the Region 8-A third seed, the loser the fourth.
Both will be on the road for the first round of the state playoffs, which begin Nov. 13.
