Taxes, pigskin on the brain

Published July 22, 2009

I hope a story on the front page of the paper last Wednesday caught your eye.

In it, News Editor Robbie Schwartz explained that collections on Walton County’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax are down 22 percent for the year. We made it through all right last year, but this year we’re looking at being 15 percent below projections for the current SPLOST.

In May 2008, the tax generated more than $845,000. This May, it was a little less than $661,000.

I thought Kevin Little, chairman of the Walton County Board of Commissioners, made a great point.

“I can’t stress enough the importance in buying and shopping locally,” Little told The Tribune. “Every dollar spent in Walton County puts money back into our local economy and helps fund these SPLOST projects.”

We’re already seeing the possible effects of a cut in SPLOST funding in Between, where the proposed Walton County Fire Rescue station has to be altered. An insufficient number of fire stations in the future could mean higher insurance rates for homeowners.

Walton County is blessed with a strong business community, and I’m impressed with the number of local people who have made an investment by starting small businesses.

Little is right that all of us need to support the local businesses wherever we can. They are the lifeblood of our community.

This week’s cool weather turned my thoughts to football.

Again this year, The Tribune will bring you all the coverage of local high school football in your Sunday paper with our Sports Extra section.

This year, we’ll be adding coverage of the new Walnut Grove High School as it starts a football program. You’ll continue to get the coverage you expect of Monroe Area, Social Circle and Loganville high schools, George Walton Academy and Loganville Christian Academy.

The regular season kicks off Aug. 28. Even before that, we’ll have our annual pigskin preview special section.

Folks in these parts love football. We’ll continue to be a part of feeding that frenzy.
