MONROE — Three people are finalists for a new spot on the Superior Court bench.
State Sen. John Douglas told Walton County Chamber of Commerce members last week Gov. Sonny Perdue will choose from among the three with an eye on having the new judge sworn in by Christmas.
The finalists are Walton County lawyer Lori B. Duff, Covington lawyer Bob Stansfield and District Attorney Ken Wynne. One of them will be the fifth judge in the Alcovy Judicial Circuit.
A nominating committee led by former Attorney General Mike Bowers met with potential new judges last month after an open nominating period.
“They whittled it down to three, who will go for personal interviews with the governor, then the governor will make his decision and that’s the person who will be sworn in,” Douglas, R-Social Circle, said in an interview Friday.
The next judge will face an election in November 2010 for a full four-year term.
“They’re all very qualified,” Douglas said. “I’m personally supporting the district attorney, Ken Wynne. I think Ken would make a great fifth judge for us.”
Douglas said he expects the next judge to be chosen from Newton County. Newton and Walton counties make up the Alcovy Circuit, and the last judge chosen was Eugene M. Benton, of Walton County.
“By the cycle that’s been used up to now, this judge should be from Newton County,” said Douglas, who also is from Newton County.
Perdue isn’t bound by the tradition, however.
The General Assembly created a fifth judicial seat earlier this year amid talk of splitting the district so that each county is its own circuit.
The new judge was supposed to be in place by July 1, but the process was delayed because Judge Samuel Ozburn was a nominee for the state Supreme Court seat that went to former U.S. Attorney David E. Nahmias.
Retired Judge Marvin Sorrells has been filling in for the fifth judge.
