It’s official: Ribbon cut on new WGHS

WALNUT GROVE — Although students have been in class for nearly two months, the newest school in Walton County was officially dedicated at a ceremonial ribbon cutting that drew local and state luminaries to Walnut Grove.
“This is a historic occasion,” said Thomas Boutwell, principal of Walnut Grove High School, the first new high school — with a distinct new district, rather than simply a new high school building for an existing school — in Walton County in nearly 100 years.
Before Boutwell and the school staff cut the ribbon, however, students and faculty gathered in the school gym with members of the Walton County Board of Education and local elected officials to celebrate the school and the completion of the long-dreamt project.
“Students, parents and members of the community,” said Gary Hobbs, superintendent of Walton County Public Schools, to the assembled crowd, “we appreciate you so much for making the opening for our newest school such a success.”
Politicians from both down the street and under the Gold Dome also commemorated the new school.
“I’m very pleased to welcome Walnut Grove High School to our city and community,” said Don Cannon, mayor of Walnut Grove. “We are delighted you are here, wish you the best and pledge our continuing support of all you do here in Walnut Grove.”
Sen. Bill Cowsert (R-Athens) said the new school was an important addition to the focus on education.
“You have a beautiful facility here — take advantage of it,” Cowsert said to the more than 700 students gathered in the gym bleachers. “The basis of our country is education.”
Both Cowsert and Cannon punctuated their remarks with cries of “Go Warriors!” which drew cheers from the crowd.
As Boutwell cut the ribbon to officially declare the high school a part of Walton County, he said he had high hopes for the future of the school.
“We are very honored to be the first student body and staff of a new high school in Walton County,” Boutwell said. “We want to raise the bar for all those who follow.”
