Roberts takes chamber gavel

Published January 18, 2009

SOCIAL CIRCLE — The Walton County Chamber of Commerce celebrated another successful year at its annual meeting Thursday.

“In the midst of trying economic times, our chamber has had a great year,” said Lee Garrett, outgoing chairman of the board.

Garrett, talking to the crowd at the Standridge Color Corp. conference center at the chamber’s 61st annual meeting, noted the chamber’s various accomplishments in 2008, including an increase in members and the opening of the Small Business Resource Center.

“We believe the chamber is a voice for business in Walton County,” Garrett said. “We want our community to be a better place to work and play.”

In addition to laughs provided by the guest speaker, Atlanta-based comedian Kenn Kington, the chamber also presented awards for the past year, including naming Carmichael Drugs the Small Business of the Year and Wal-Mart Logistics as the Large Business of the Year.

Walton County firefighter Christopher Finch was named the Public Servant of the Year, Monroe Police Department assistant Loren Roberts was named Ambassador of the Year and furniture entrepreneur Charles Sanders was awarded the J.L. McGarity Citizenship Award for his contributions to the chamber.

The chamber also named a new person to the Hall of Fame, an honor given to those who gave considerable assistance to the chamber while alive. This year’s honoree was the late William A. Childers Jr., only the fifth person to be named to the chamber’s Hall of Fame.

“We appreciate this honor,” said Carolyn Childers, the honoree’s widow. “Bill would have been glad to receive this.”

After the awards, Garrett formally passed the chairman’s gavel on to 2009 Chairman Roy Roberts Jr., who promised to continue to lead the chamber as Garrett had done.

“I’ll to my best to carry on that success in 2009,” Roberts said. “The economy is struggling, but there are a lot of opportunities to network. Let’s try to support our county and our local business this year.”
