Walton youths excel

Published August 1, 2010

Walton County youths recently competed in the USA Track & Field Georgia Junior Olympics. The qualifying meet was held at Monroe Area High School on June 5 and the state meet was held at Westlake High School in Atlanta June 17-20. Regional competition followed July 7-11 in Greensboro, N.C.

These athletes are members of TK’s Electro Track Club, which is a USATF member club that was re-organized in Walton County this year. After another successful season with the Walton County recreation program, it was a last minute decision to start this program again, according to Walton County coach Tim Kemp.

“Parents were asking to start this program and after seeing USATF host a meet here in Walton County last year and only a few athletes from Walton competing, we felt compelled to get our athletes involved in this program since it was here on our home turf,” said Kemp. “We are hoping to expand this program next season and get more athletes involved with the program.”

Since retiring from coaching with the school system because board policy does not allow administrators to coach, Kemp said he still wanted to be a part of track and field in the county.

“The past four years I have been working with the recreation track and field program, which now allows me to not only work with athlete from one or two schools but the entire county,” Kemp said. “We have been fortunate to have Tommy Dekle to assist with the shot put event in which we hope to expand with the discus next year.

“Our main goals are centered around the importance of being a student first, athlete second, teaching basic fundamentals and techniques, participation and having fun.”

Betty Dekle qualified in the midget girls division in the shot put event at the regional level, finishing sixth.

Sheldon Arnold — in the sub-bantam boys classification — placed fifth and sixth in the 100 meters and 200 meters, respectively. Arnold was first in the 100 and second in the 200 at the June 5 qualifying meet. He also won the long jump event.

Others who participated successfully in one or more of the three competitions include Javianne Oliver, Brittany Samples, Imani Arnold, Demek Kemp, Prenisha Marshall and Joseph Reed.
