City passes on park property

Published January 27, 2010

MONROE — The City Council has decided to pass on buying two pieces of property adjacent to Childers Park after an appraisal of the parcels was deemed too high.

Chapman & Wellman LLC., a group whose founders are associated with Friends of Walton County which spearheaded the Spring Street park’s development in 2008, had hoped the city would spend nearly $160,000 to buy the land on West Washington Street. The group owns about .3 acres at 214 W. Washington St. and had an option to buy 218 W. Washington St., which totals 1.12 acres and currently houses a rental property.

The group asked the city to buy the two parcels of land for about $160,000, city officials said. However, an appraisal requested by the city found the land valued at $90,500. Even at the lower price, the Council voted unanimously not to buy the land Jan. 11.

City documents show Chapman and Wellman LLC. will attempt to raise private funds to cover future property buys.
