New Social Circle board member tapped

Published October 21, 2009

When Tammy Murphy became the newest member of the Social Circle Board of Education, she was just keeping up the family legacy.

Murphy, the daughter of former board member and current Social Circle councilwoman Anne Peppers, was sworn in last week as the newest member of the board, taking the seat formerly occupied by Tim Lemonds. Lemonds is running unopposed for the chairman seat on the board and was required to resign his current seat on the board to run.

“I was called to see if I was interested,” Murphy said. “My mother was a board member for a number of years and I wanted to do my part.”

Murphy, who works as a purchasing buyer for Lithonia Lighting in Conyers, is a lifelong resident of Social Circle and the mother of two children — daughter Tori, who graduated from Social Circle High School last year and is now a student at Georgia College and State University, and son Chad, a ninth grader at the high school.

“Having kids in the school system, I wanted to do my part and help wherever I can,” Murphy said.

Bettye Ray, superintendent of Social Circle City Schools, said she had high expectations for Murphy.

“I hope the new board member can continue in the same progressive direction we’ve been following on the board,” Ray said.

Sitting on her first meeting Thursday, Murphy said she’s still looking to learn the ropes of her new position but hoped to maintain the board’s achievements.

“It’s all still really new to me,” Murphy said. “I just want to contribute in whatever ways I can.”
