Devils need to win, hope

Published November 6, 2009

A football season that began with as much promise as any in Loganville High School history could end with a thud tonight.

Beginning 2009 ranked in the top 10 in the state among Class AAAA programs, the Red Devils carry a 5-4 record into the regular season finale against Winder-Barrow. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Red Devil Stadium. Loganville must win and hope Salem falls to unbeaten Apalachee to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot in Region 8-AAAA.

If the Red Devils do manage to back into the postseason, it would probably set up a meeting next Friday at No. 3-ranked Sandy Creek in Tyrone.

While the main focus will be on the outcome of the game, the press box at the stadium will be overflowing with media from around the area and beyond. Star running back Storm Johnson announced earlier this week he intends to sign with the University of Miami next February. Reporters from the Sunshine State will be on hand to cover the game.

“Miami is going to be a good place for Storm,” said LHS head coach Eric Godfree. “He'll get the chance to carry the ball a good bit and showcase his talents on national television. We are proud of him and all of our players here at Loganville.”

While Johnson has been the main attraction in Godfree’s tailback-oriented offensive attack, turnovers have been a major concern all season. The Devils fumbled twice last week in a 31-27 loss to Rockdale County. The Bulldogs turned both into touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the Devils must cut down on untimely interceptions and improve an erratic kicking game. Missed tackles and a lack of team speed on defense have also contributed to Loganville’s problems at times.

“Giving up the big play has been an issue for us this year, but our kids continue to work hard and try to get better each week,” Godfree said.

The good thing about the past is that its just that — the past. A win tonight probably puts LHS into the playoffs and the season begins anew. Win tonight and everybody is 0-0 again and all is forgiven and forgetten.
