Head-on crash marks 11th fatality of 2009

Walton County had its 11th fatality over the weekend following a head-on collision on Highway 138 near Walnut Grove.
According to reports, a Subaru Legacy driven by a 42-year-old Monroe resident was traveling westbound on Highway 138 about 7:15 a.m. Sunday when he crossed over and struck a Dodge van head-on. The accident killed Gerardo Nunez, 16, of McDonough, one of the occupants in the Dodge van. He and another passenger were unrestrained in the back part of the van, as there were only two seats in the vehicle.
Georgia State Patrol officials would not release the name of the Monroe resident that was driving the Subaru, who was airlifted from the scene. Charges are pending and the investigation remains ongoing.
GSP officials indicated speed was not a factor and according to witnesses and evidence at the scene, the Subaru was not attempting to pass but rather just started to drift. The Dodge attempted to swerve unsuccessfully to avoid a collision. Two other passengers in the Dodge were critically injured and had to be airlifted from the scene.
The fatality was one of 12 over the Christmas holiday weekend in Georgia, which also had 2,167 crashes and 503 injuries reported from 6 p.m. Dec. 24 to midnight Sunday, according to GSP officials. All of the reported numbers were less than projections and almost half the injuries and fatalities reported in 2008.
GSP officials also released this week their projections for the New Year’s holiday period, beginning 6 p.m. Thursday and ending at midnight Sunday. They are projecting 2,330 crashes with 1,004 injuries and 16 fatalities. Last year during the same time period Georgia had 2,998 crashes, 1,222 injuries and 22 fatalities.
The recent fatality puts the county past its mark of 10 fatalities reported in 2008. There were 14 fatalities reported in 2006 and 2007 and a record 33 fatalities in 2005.
