Discovery Channel to probe county crime

Published October 28, 2009

They were dark points in Walton County’s history, but light will be cast on the murders of Tina Marie Hill and Tom Daniels as they are used for an episode of a TV series.

The series is “Crime Town, USA” and uses as a basis true stories of violent crime in small towns across the country. The series is told from the point of view of the investigators and law enforcement officials who worked the respective cases. The series airs on the Investigation Discovery channel. Shooting is scheduled to start in the coming weeks, though a final air date has not been set.

“We have a research department that looks at different cases throughout the country about how smaller police departments solve crimes,” said Patrick Rogers, the show’s producer. “We have no real set criteria — we just go by feel when selecting cases. We really just thought this was a good example of a smaller department doing good police work. With the (Daniels) murder, we thought it was odd two different guns were used. And the Hill case was interesting because it started out as a missing persons case and the detectives never stopped.

“Our goal is to highlight good police work, tell a good mystery story and show how police departments in many cases don’t give up until they find somebody. We’ve looked at a lot of cases and these detectives did a good job.”

Each 30-minute episode tells the story of the investigation from start to finish and will include interviewing the main people involved in the case and re-creating certain scenes from the investigation. Detectives will be formally interviewed and asked to take producers through the investigation step by step. Extras will be hired to help re-create scenes of suspects being interrogated and filming will include detectives at the time doing some of their everyday activities. The second day of the shoot will include re-creating the scene where the body was found and other re-creations of various scenes from the investigation.

Two years, four months and 27 days after Hill’s disappearance in 2005 in Social Circle, William Fred Maloy Jr. was sentenced to life in prison for the murder. Daniel Luke Ferguson, a neighbor, was charged last fall with the 2008 murder of Daniels and also received life in prison.

Other episodes have included rural Michigan, Iowa, Arkansas, and last month the show did a piece on the Lance Herndon case in Roswell.

Rogers has also been a co-executive producer for an episode of “The Real NCIS” and was a series producer of four episodes of “Missing Persons Unit,” among other work.
