In-line team wins season opener
Published October 21, 2009
The Loganville Red Devils In-Line Hockey Club earned a hard fought victory in its season opener Oct. 11 in Snellville by defeating the Starrs Mill Panthers from Peachtree City, 4-2.
Loganville goalie Nick Bello was outstanding in goal, stopping 29 of 31 shots in a fast-paced game with the Devils getting 41 shots on Starrs Mill goalie James Morgan, who nearly equalled Bello’s performance in the net.
Loganville opened the scoring just 1 minute, 10 seconds into the game when Mac Adams buried a slap shot from the top of the face-off circle, putting the Devils up 1-0. It was a lead the Devils would not give up. Andrew Smith set up Adams with a crossing pass for his first assist of the season.
Just 1:55 later the Devils scored a power play goal again from the top of the circle with Starr’s Mill forward Josh Staley serving a roughing penalty. This time Loganville’s Shane Lockhart got the helper when he found Adams wide open for a 2-0 lead. Starrs Mill finally got on the scoreboard with just 2:01 left in the first period when Ryan Martin scored on a 2-on-1 breakaway as the Devils got caught with too few players back on defense.
The second period turned into a defensive battle as both goalies showed off their skills, stopping shot after shot.
The Panthers finally broke through to tie the score with 7:39 left in the period when Tyler Slaggert picked up a loose puck in a scramble around the net.
The Devils came right back just 53 seconds later to regain the lead when Smith punched in a shot for the Red Devils putting the club up 3-2.
The final stanza was more of the same as both teams continued to put on the offensive pressure until Loganville’s Shane Lockhart sealed the deal as he out skated three Panther defenders to score an unassisted goal giving the Devils the 4-2 win.
