Stress test time for area fans

Published October 28, 2009

If you don’t have a dog in this fight, then the battle for Region 8-AAAA supremacy is a treat to watch.

If you do have a rooting interest, you’re probably pulling your hair out.

Parity can be a wonderful but maddening thing.

Heading into the final two weeks of the Georgia High School Association football’s regular season, the only thing for certain is that Apalachee — in just its 10th year of existence — will take home the school’s first-ever league championship trophy. And it appears the Wildcats will do it with an unblemished league record.

After that, the final three state playoff spots are very much up for grabs, with six teams still in the running

With 11 teams in 8-AAAA, every game is a region game. This year, it might take every game, and then some, to sort this thing out.

Already, region officials are brushing up on the tie-breaking procedures.

While it’s one of the biggest regions in the Georgia High School Association, 8-AAAA has seldom been considered a state power.

The last team from the league to win a state championship was Clarke Central in 1985. But the region’s quickly developing into one of the most competitive and unpredictable.

Anybody who bet on Loganville to finish first last year should be consulted on lottery numbers and investment tips.

Same for the person who predicted the Red Devils would struggle to make it back into the post season this fall.

If Loganville loses to Rockdale County this Friday, it might very well be spending the postseason as a spectator.

On the other hand, if the Red Devils win out and Clarke Central stumbles down the stretch, Loganville could open the playoffs at home.

If things really go haywire, both Clarke and Loganville could be on the outside looking in while three teams who missed the playoffs last fall take their shot at a championship.

No matter what ultimately goes down, 8-AAAA’s four postseason representatives will have earned their spot in the title chase.

But their frazzled fans may be too stressed out to care.
