WGHS opens to rave reviews
Published August 2, 2009
WALTON COUNTY — As the school bell rang in the new year Thursday and Walton County Public Schools resumed classes, anticipation was especially high at Walnut Grove High School.
The new high school opened its doors for the first time and students remarked that it even still had that new school smell.
“It’s great,” said Rachel Tallent, 16, a junior at the first new Walton high school to open in decades. “I love it.”
Tallent, previously a student at Monroe Area High School, had the opportunity to elect which school to attend as a junior and chose to attend the new school because it closer to home.
“I grew up in Walnut Grove and I wanted to be closer to where I live,” Tallent said. “Being in a new environment is really helpful. It feels a whole lot bigger. The hallways aren’t as crowded.”
Thomas Boutwell, principal at WGHS, said the first first day of school was a real success.
“The first day has gone very smoothly,” Boutwell said. “There haven’t been any real problems.”
Boutwell said the students had especially seemed enthusiastic about starting at a new school.
“We’ve got some really excited students proud to be in a new building,” Boutwell said. “They’re really taking ownership of this building.”
Gary Hobbs, superintendent of WCPS, said the first day of school went well across the entire school system.
“It is always exciting to begin a new school year,” Hobbs said. “The first day of school went smoothly and I know this is due to the preparation and professionalism of our outstanding staff.
“We anticipate another year of exemplary student achievement in all of our schools.”
