Cheer Devils claim region championship
Published November 11, 2009
LOGANVILLE — Loganville High School captured its third Region 8-AAAA competitive cheerleading title in four years last weekend at the Northeast Georgia Area Championships held at The Inferno.
As region champions, the Cheer Devils automatically qualify for Saturday’s state finals at Columbus State University. The first and second-place squads move on to the finals. The teams that finished third and fourth in their respective regions must participate in Friday’s preliminary competition in an effort to move into the finals.
“I’m really happy for our eight seniors especially,” said LHS coach Allison Creel. “This is a very close-knit group because they’ve been together for so long.”
LHS squad members include seniors Kelsey Coates, Caitlin Cohen, Kayla Gray, Julie Halstead, Adriana Hudgins, Kristin Moody, Sarah Reuter and Chelsea Thomas. Also, juniors Chelsea Brooks, Allie Spivey and Heather Wilson along with sophomores Tiffany Green, Sidney Hurst and Becky Rosean and freshmen Shelby Andrews, Lindsey Boswell, Shawnabeth Newman and Lauren Tait.
Classes AAAA, AAAAA and coed will compete together, beginning at 2 p.m. The session will include 48 teams. Loganville will take the mat as the 36th team at approximately 4:30 p.m. Creel said there is no way to predict an exact time because the competition will run continuously with one 15-minute break for the judges.
Social Circle will also be making the trip west this weekend as the No. 2 squad from Region 8-A. Social Circle’ session will include all finalists in A, AA and AAA, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday. Forty-eight teams will participate in this session, also. The Redskins will be the final squad to perform and should be on the mat between noon and 12:30 p.m.
First-year program Walnut Grove finished sixth in Region 8-AA and did not qualify for state.
