Mrs. Julia Cook Brackett

Mrs. Julia Cook Brackett of Athens, died on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009.

She was preceded in death by Ernest Marshall Brackett, her husband of 58 years.

Born in Walton County on July 9, 1908, she was the daughter of Benjamin Oscar and Gladys Lavinia Durden Cook. In 1923 Julia accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior. She was a member of Athens First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Brackett attended the University of Georgia, earning a B.A. and M.A. From 1929-1935 she was a school teacher at Athens High School, Pannell School in Walton County and David C. Barrow Elementary School in Athens. She devoted the next two decades to her family and then continued her teaching career in seven elementary schools in Clarke County.

She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, Kappa Delta Pi, the Athens Ladies Garden Club, Elijah Clarke Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Grandmother’s Club, the Thomas Miller Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century and the Jewel Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Brackett is survived by three sons. Ernest Marshall Brackett, Jr., and his wife Betty of Monroe, Benjamin Gaylord Brackett and his wife Ann and Charles Edward Brackett of Athens, seven grandchildren, Ernest Marshall Brackett, III and his wife Ann of Wake Forest N.C., Carol Lynn and husband David Puffer of Ridgeway, Iowa., Gary Cook Brackett and wife Jill of Eatonton, Sarah Beth and husband Randy Starrett of Monroe, Laura Ellen Brackett and husband Daniel Cushing of Phoenixville, Pa., Jeffrey Crawford Brackett and wife Miriam of Ventura, Ca., David Gregory Hill Brackett and wife Margaret of Atlanta; fifteen great grandchildren, Ashleigh Taylor Brackett, Seth Daniel Phillips, Maya Elaine Phillips, Gregory Cook Brackett, Zachary Ryan Brackett, Tanner Decatur Brackett, Bradley David Starrett, Brittany Kay Starrett, Benjamin Joseph Cushing, Kevin Michael Cushing, Joshua Thomas Arichea Brackett, Arielle Marie Arichea Brackett, Daniel Benjamin Arichea Brackett, Sara Ann Brackett and Laura Claire Brackett.

During the past century Julia Brackett exemplified loving service to five generations of family- as devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be remembered as a teacher who positively affected the lives of many Athenians.

Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. in the Bridges Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park. Grandsons served as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Athens First Baptist Church, 355 Pulaski St., Athens, Ga 30601.

Bridges Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.
