Red-Out Friday at SCHS

Published October 28, 2009

Social Circle head football coach Troy Morris is issuing a red alert for all Redskins fans. With second place in the region and a first-round home playoff game on the line Friday night against Commerce (4-4, 3-1), the third-year coach is calling for a “Red-Out.”

“We’re asking all our fans to wear red to the game,” Morris said. “I’m hoping we can create a great atmosphere for our players and that they can feed off the fans.”

In what will be the biggest home game in Morris’ short tenure at Social Circle, the Redskins (4-4, 3-1) have a chance to move into second place in Region 8-A behind top-ranked Wesleyan. If they can knock off both Commerce and Athens Academy to close out the regular season, the Redskins will be hosting a post-season game for the first time in four years and only the third time in school history.

“That was one of our biggest goals heading into the season,” Morris said. “We feel like we’ve put ourselves in pretty good position.”

At least it’s a familiar position. Since Social Circle joined 8-A in 2002, Commerce has been its nemesis. The Redskins are 2-12 all-time against the Tigers and haven’t beaten them since 2005, the last and only time Social Circle won a region championship.

But Morris likes his team’s chances this year. They are at home and as healthy as they’ve been all season.

Loganville (5-3) at Rockdale Co. (5-3)

The Red Devils have left themselves no room for error as they head into the final two weeks of the regular season.

Here’s the bottom line: win out and they assure themselves a spot in the state playoffs and probably a No. 3 seed. Lose one more and they risk ending their season after 10 games.

It’s hardly the position the Red Devils or their fans thought they’d be facing when the season began with such high hopes.

The defending region champs were ranked among the state’s top 10 for the first time in school history and had added to its roster one of the premiere running backs in the state in Storm Johnson.

But after dropping the season opener to Clarke Central and going 1-2 through three games, Loganville has been fighting an uphill battle.

The hill only gets steeper against a red-hot Rockdale County team that has won its past four after starting the season 1-3. The streak began with an overtime victory over Clarke Central.

During their recent run, the Bulldogs have been on a roll offensively, averaging 28 points a game.

That’s bad news for a slumping Red Devils defense that’s surrendering 26 a game.

Monroe Area (0-8) at Heritage (2-6)

In a match up of two teams that are better than their records would indicate, something’s got to give Friday night in Conyers.

Heritage has lost six games by an average of a single touchdown. The Patriots came within a point of upsetting region leader Apalachee last Friday.

Monroe, losers of 18 straight, has lost its past four games by a total of 21 points. They were tied with cross-county rival Loganville at halftime last Friday before falling 34-25.

With their postseason hopes long since dashed, these two teams will be trying to wrap up the year on a positive note.

The Hurricanes are hoping to pick up their first Class AAAA victory before dropping to AAA next fall.

Mt. Vernon Academy (3-5, 0-2) at George Walton (6-3, 1-1)

A season that began with so much promise has suddenly turned ugly for the Bulldogs.

After a pair of impressive wins to open the season, which landed GWA atop the Georgia Independent School Association rankings in Class AAA, the Bulldogs have gone 4-3 and find themselves in a must-win game Friday for the right to host a first-round playoff game.

GWA lost a chance to clinch a second-straight Region 1-AAA title with a shocking loss to Pinecrest on Senior Night last Friday. The Bulldogs managed just 81 yards rushing and turned the ball over four times in the second half.

Offensively, the Bulldogs have relied heavily the big-play all year. But against Pinecrest, they could never break a long one.

Their only points came on a 36-yard Cord Gunnin field goal and a 77-yard Michael Peek interception return.
