Hinkle wins in Grayson

Published November 3, 2009

GRAYSON - In his first contested race, Mayor Jim Hinkle was re-elected to serve another two-year term as mayor of Grayson.

Hinkle received 260 votes and his opponent, Damon Ladd-Thomas Sr., received 54. Of the 314 votes cast, 185 were cast the day of the election and 129 were early or absentee ballots. The total votes cast represented 21 percent of the 1,490 registered voters.

Ladd-Thomas was gracious in his defeat, phoning Hinkle to congratulate him on "a very sound win."

"He called and congratulated me on a good race and said he would be around city hall to see if he could help," Hinkle said when reached at his victory party at Hail Mary's in Grayson.

"I mean 260 to 54, that was a whooping," Ladd-Thomas said. "We didn't expect such a bad performance - it seemed to resonate with the people door-to-door but it obviously didn't resonate at the polls. The people have spoken and (Hinkle) can definitely now say he was elected."

Ladd-Thomas said he hoped that his message of inclusiveness that seemed to resonate so well door-to-door at least opened up more dialog for residents and businesses in the city and they would be encouraged to get more involved in what was going on in the city. He didn't rule out another run for mayor at some time in the future but acknowledged Hinkle was the people's choice, at least for the next two years.

Hinkle has served as the mayor of Grayson after being elected unopposed every two years since 2001. He also served as mayor for 12 years after being elected in 1981 and then re-elected unopposed every two years until choosing not to run in 1993. Ladd-Thomas was the first opponent he'd ever had to face when seeking the office of mayor of Grayson.

Incumbent council members Alison Wilkerson-Rooks and Marcus Hinton were elected unopposed with Rooks getting 278 votes and Hinton getting 272.
