Morris Jordan tapped as new water director

aMONROE — Going with someone more financially savvy but less experienced in the field of water management, the Walton County Board of Commissioners hired Morris Jordan as the county’s new water director.
The decision came after an executive session at last week’s meeting.
“With the water department being an enterprise fund, we need to keep a firm grasp of the finances and budget to enable us to be prepared for future construction as well as expansion of the current water system,” Commission Chairman Kevin Little said after the meeting. “Mr. Jordan’s experience in finance will ensure that our current and future projects are cost-effective and will be completed in a timely manner.”
The county leader added Jordan has taken coursework necessary to achieve various water licenses and is waiting to take the final test.
Jordan was one of three finalists selected from 28 applicants. A general manager with a local investment group, the Monroe resident was selected over Andrew Harvill, water and sewer manager for Newton County, and Steven Pope, special projects manager for the Rockdale County water system.
An interim director has been in place since previous director Wendel Geiger retired in May, the same time business manager Amy Myers did as well. Once the list of the candidates was whittled down to the finalists, Little said before the final selection was made the county was leaning toward a candidate with top-level financial management skills.
“There was no financial problem at the water department previously,” Little said. “We just wanted to change directions for the future. All department directors are asked to maintain a number of finance-related tasks. With the water department being a multimillion dollar enterprise fund, we felt it was necessary to have good visionary management with more emphasis on finance.”
In addition to currently serving as the general manager for WB&T Investors LLC/Liberty Investors LLC in Monroe, a company he has worked for since 1994, Jordan has served as the chairman of the Development Authority of Walton County and has been with the organization since 1994. His financial sector heavy background also includes working as the executive vice president with Main Street Bank in Covington, president and CEO of Walton Bank & Trust Co. and executive vice president with First National Bank of Newton County.
Jordan’s educational background includes a graduate degree from the University of Delaware in banking and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from North Georgia College and State University. He also has a host of professional development achievements, including being a graduate of Leadership Walton and Leadership Georgia as well as being a level 1A class certified from the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission.
Jordan, who could not be reached for comment, started his new job Tuesday.
