Body found in Social Circle identified

Published December 13, 2009

Walton County Sheriff’s Office officials said preliminary autopsy results revealed Robert “Drew” Nichols was shot multiple times, with one shot proving to be fatal.

Nichols’ body was found by a hunter off Clegg Farm Road last Sunday. Walton County and Newton County sheriff’s office personnel have been working the crime together and determined the homicide took place in Newton County. On Tuesday, Newton County Sheriff’s Office took out arrest warrants for felony murder on four suspects, including one Walton County resident.

All have since been arrested.

Chad Ashley Allen, 30, of 3371 Youth Monroe Road, Monroe, was arrested Wednesday during a traffic stop in Rockdale County on the arrest warrants filed by the NCSO. His house was searched shortly after his arrest by the WCSO Special Emergency Response Team.

“Information during the course of the investigation led us to Allen’s house, and we executed a search warrant and did recover some evidence of value to the case,” WCSO Capt. Chris Cannon said, adding the NCSO executed search warrants on the residences of the other suspects simultaneously. “The cooperation level between the Walton County and Newton County sheriff’s offices was phenomenal. We had one goal and that was to determine who the victim was, what transpired and to make the applicable charges to the ones responsible.”

The investigation remains ongoing and despite all indications the murder took place in Newton County, WCSO investigators continue to aid in the case.

According to Walton County Sheriff’s Office officials, at about 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 6, a hunter was reportedly walking in the woods when he noticed what appeared to be a partially covered body. He called 911 and WCSO deputies verified it was the body of a middle-age adult male who apparently had been dead for several days.

WCSO investigators suspected foul play almost from the outset and NCSO officials were called in Monday after preliminary indications pointed toward the actual murder having taken place in Newton County.

The other suspects arrested are Scott West, 31, Robert Vincent Lambert, 35, and Sam Dumas Dawkins, 44, all of Covington.
