Published June 1, 2008
SNELLVILLE — The Loganville In-Line Hockey Club captured its second tournament title in the last three months.
The Red Devils earned the gold medal last weekend at the Amateur Athletic Union national high school championship tournament at the South Gwinnett Athletic Association arena in Snellville.
Fresh off their March AAA state championship in the Georgia High School In-Line Hockey League, the Devils gave up only five goals in games during the tournament.
Led by goalie Kendrick Van Deusen, Loganville opened the tournament with a hard fought 2-0 shutout of Lewis Palmer High School from the Colorado High School In-Line Hockey League. Andrew Fussell and Cody Mokrzycki got the markers for the Devils.
The Devils lost to a talented Lassiter High School team from Alpharetta 1-0 in the second game, but earned enough points to get to the Tier II Medal Round.
In the semi-finals the Loganville club beat Duluth, 6-1. Loganville got goals from Mokrzycki, Kenny Brooks, Fussell, David Kelley and Jeremy Davidson to move to the finals against Jupiter High School from West Palm Beach, Fla.
The Devils got on the scoreboard first against the Warriors when Brooks got his second goal of the tournament. They later went up 2-0 on a another goal by Mokrzycki.
Jupiter fought back to make it a 2-1 game.
But again Loganville opened up a two-goal lead on a goal by Kelley with just eight minutes left in the game.
The Warriors dominated the Red Devils over the last few minutes of the game with goalie Van Deusen getting several key saves down the stretch.
Loganville's Andrew Smith netted an empty net goal with 10 seconds to play, giving the Red Devils a 4-2 victory and the Junior Varsity AAU Tier II Championship.
