Busy weekend ahead locally
Published May 11, 2007
I’m scheduled to go out of town this weekend but since so much is going on back here, I’m almost tempted to stay.
It looks like it’s going to be a filled weekend — or at least Saturday promises to be.
At 11 a.m., the New London Driving School is having a Life Net Georgia/Emory Flight helicopter land on site at the driving school as a stark reminder of consequences of unwise driving choices — something that was tragically brought home again this week in the death of Brookwood High School’s star quarterback Daniel Peek.
NLDS founder Alan Deighton, who was recently honored at the state level for his contributions to teen driving safety, is hosting a program with guest speaker Judge Greg Adams in an effort to get his safe driving message across to local teens. As Deighton said in the release, “God only gives you a fraction of a second to make a decision that will save your life — make sure it is the right decision.
The program begins at 11 a.m. at the parking lot outside the business at 4392 Lawrenceville Highway.
Also at 11 a.m., the first Loganville Public Safety Day kicks-off on the grassy area of the Ingles parking lot. Members of the Loganville Police and Fire departments will be on hand to cook hamburgers and hot dogs for members of the community. There will also be fire trucks and demonstrations with safety information for the public. It is a great opportunity for members of the community to meet those they rely on to keep them safe.
And again starting at 11 a.m., the Hilltop Flyers, a local radio controlled aircraft club is having a special Boy Scouts Day at 3285 Moon Road. The scouts will be able to see RC aircraft fly, will get to actually fly a real RC aircraft, have some fun with flight simulators and get to learn how planes fly. Anyone wanting to find out more about the event can get the information off the Hilltop Flyers Web site at www.hilltopflyers.com.
If the day’s activities haven’t tired you out completely, at 6 p.m. you can head out to Tribble Mill Park in Grayson for some fun activities for the kids followed by a showing under the stars of the movie “Happy Feet.” The movie is scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m.
Who said there’s never anything to do in Loganville? Now for the best part — all these activities are free — all you have to do is hope for good weather.
With all this free entertainment, you might just have enough money saved to treat the family to the new hottest meal in town — Chili’s, which had its grand opening yesterday.
I was one of the lucky ones who got to eat at Chili’s during the training week thanks to a friend’s invite and I’m happy to say, they didn’t disappoint. If they keep up the taste and service we experienced, Chili’s in Loganville is likely to have to employ its own traffic crew to control the traffic in and out of the parking lot.
The only thing that was missing was Chili’s traditional signature Presidente margarita drink and margarita party to kick off the opening — something Chili’s associates who came in from all over the country were a little surprised by. But something they also don’t seem to expect to last too long.
We shall see.
