Fox makes believers

Published November 3, 2009

If Mark Fox isn’t enough to make you a believer in the future of University of Georgia basketball, then Bruce Kelly will be.

Kelly, general manager of Horton Automotive in Monroe, brought Fox to town last week as guest speaker at the Rotary Club.

Fox started his speech by apologizing for a cracking voice. That happens when you’ve worked to get the attention, not only of your players, but of fans too.

“The energy and passion of you fans can certainly make a difference,” Fox said, urging folks in Walton County to make the drive to Athens, then make plenty of noise at Stegeman Coliseum.

Fox, 40, came to UGA from Nevada in April. And despite the challenges that lie ahead — tough Southeastern Conference foes among them — Fox is unfazed.

“This program can grow to a point that we’re all very proud of it.”

Fox said the process of changing the attitude surrounding Georgia basketball starts in the locker room. It includes getting his student-athletes to take pride in their university and to play and practice the right way.

And if they don’t get the message immediately, well, Fox is willing to take it to another level.

Fox decided his team was acting as “an undisciplined group” recently. The consequence was a field trip to Sanford Stadium for some running, up and down the bleachers, until Fox got his point across.

“I just gave directions from the sidelines,” he said. “I felt like Mark Richt for a day.”

After Fox’s visit to Monroe, I spoke with Kelly, who is a big supporter of the Bulldog program.

Kelly said he is “extremely excited” about the future of Georgia basketball under Fox.

After hearing the coach in person, I think Kelly is right-on in his way of thinking.

Fox will have a disciplined team, and his success at Nevada was no fluke. He’ll bring a winner to Athens.
