Alleged robber killed in high speed chase

Published December 23, 2009

A Winder man who allegedly robbed the Dollar General store on Highway 138 was killed in a traffic accident while attempting to elude officers.

Durwin Anthony Schofield, 41, of Winder, died of apparent injuries suffered after being ejected from his car a mile from the Walton and Barrow county line on Highway 11. Schofield reportedly matched the description of a robber of two other recent Dollar General stores in Barrow County.

According to Walton County Sheriff’s Office officials, about 2 p.m. Sunday an armed robbery was reported at the business, located about two miles west of Monroe. Shortly after the incident was reported, a WCSO deputy noticed a car matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle heading east on Highway 138 near Zaxby’s. The deputy got behind the vehicle and followed it as it proceeded to merge onto Highway 78. Once the deputy activated his police lights, the car sped off.

A Monroe Police Department cruiser joined the chase as Schofield turned onto Highway 11 heading toward Barrow County.

“He was driving reckless, speeding, passing anything he could and doing anything he could to get away, jeopardizing the lives of anyone on the highway,” WCSO Chief Deputy Bruce Wright said.

Near Campton, the Georgia State Patrol joined and took the lead of the high-speed pursuit.

The 10-mile chase came to an end when the GSP officer did a PIT maneuver and Schofield lost control of his car, veering off the road and running into a tree.

He later died at Barrow Medical Center.
