Devils need to rebound
Published October 23, 2009
Even after last Friday’s heartbreaking 42-41 overtime loss to unbeaten Apalachee, Loganville continues to control its own destiny in regard to making the Class AAAA playoffs for the second consecutive season.
If the Red Devils win their final three games — including tonight’s 7:30 p.m. matchup with county and Region 8 rival Monroe Area — they will finish no lower than third place in the final league standings. Loganville coach Eric Godfree is expecting a tough game from the Purple Hurricanes, even though the team has yet to win in the region.
“Rivalry games are always fun and usually very close,” said Godfree. “Monroe Area is a good football team that has lost some very exciting games lately.”
The Hurricanes (0-7) are coming off a 24-20 defeat at the hands of Habersham Central. Loganville (4-3) also lost to the Raiders by four points earlier this season. Monroe Area has lost its last three games by a total of only 12 points.
“They are young on both sides of the ball and have a lot of reasons to be excited about the future,” Godfree said. “They have played everyone close this year in 8-AAAA and I believe Monroe will be a playoff team next year when they drop back down to AAA.”
The ’Canes have not won on the football field since moving up in classification prior to the 2008 season. However, with realignment on the horizon, the Monroe Area program will rejoin AAA next fall.
Loganville still has lots to play for in the last three weeks.
“We realize we need to win out to finish third in our region and that’s a good motivator,” Godfree said. “Second place is very doubtful because Clarke Central would have to lose two of their final three games for that to happen. But, we like the looks of the brackets from the third seed. We just have to get there first.”
