Walton honors veterans
Published November 15, 2009
All across Walton County, students, military personnel and the community gathered together in events to celebrate this nation’s veterans.
To commemorate Wednesday’s celebration of Veterans Day, schools and retirement centers alike welcomed veterans and family members to a celebration of the service of the men and women of the armed forces.
“The price of freedom is eternal vigilance,” said state Sen. John Douglas, R-Social Circle, to the assembled students at Social Circle Elementary School. “But as long as we have young people like this, our veterans and the brave men and women on active duty right now, we’re going to be in good shape.”
The Social Circle event was only one of many Veterans Day events, including school assemblies at George Walton Academy, Carver Middle School, Sharon Elementary School and Social Circle Middle/ High School, as well as celebrations with senior veterans by American Legion Post 64 at both The Mews Retirement Village in Social Circle and Great Oaks in Monroe.
“Today we honor the men and women who served this country in the armed forces,” said Col. Clay Harris, organizer of both Social Circle school events. “They are our finest citizens.”
At the same ceremony, school officials and community members took time to honor Harris.
In a surprise announcement to Harris, school superintendent Bettye Ray and members of the Social Circle Rotary Club, including veterans Allen Whitley and Doug White, honored Harris with a mounted setting for his service medals and a scrapbook documenting his military career.
“We wanted to give a little something back for all he does every year to remember and honor our veterans,” Whitley said.
Harris was humbled by the award, but focused on veterans.
“Thank you for your dedicated service, both in peacetime and war,” Harris said.
