Devils not in control any longer

Published November 4, 2009

Loganville will be in the uncomfortable position of cheering for a region rival Friday night.

Besides needing a victory over Winder-Barrow (2-7), the Red Devils will need Apalachee to knock off Salem to earn the fourth state playoff spot out of Region 8-AAAA.

If you have to place your postseason hopes in somebody else, Apalachee would be the ideal choice. The Wildcats are unbeaten, region champs and ranked eighth in the state.

The Red Devils (5-4) lost control of their destiny with a loss to Rockdale County last week. It was their fourth loss in a season that began with them being ranked in the top 10 for the first time in school history.

“The kids have given good effort,” said Loganville head coach Eric Godfree. “But we haven’t gotten a lot of the breaks that we did in the past. We’ve had too many turnovers and not enough takeaways.”

The result has been a defense that has given up too many points. The Red Devils tried some changes on defense against Rockdale but still surrendered four touchdowns.

Fortunately, the offense has been scoring on a record pace behind the running of Storm Johnson. Johnson, who earlier this fall committed and then withdrew his commitment to LSU, now says he has decided to cast his lot with the University of Miami. More on Johnson in Friday’s edition of The Loganville Tribune.

“Our games have been exciting to watch,” Godfree said. “But it’s definitely more fun if you’re winning.”

Rockdale County (6-3) at Monroe Area (0-9)

The Hurricanes two-year Class AAAA nightmare comes to an end Friday. Since moving to Region 8-AAAA in 2008, Monroe has yet to win a football game. It’s losing skid extended to 19 games with a loss to Heritage last Friday.

The last chance to pick up a win before dropping to AAA next fall comes against a Rockdale County team that is playoff bound for the first time in four seasons.

Having had just four winning seasons in the past 20 years and having played past the regular season just three times during that span, the Hurricanes have never been a football power. But bumping up to AAAA didn’t help them try to get untracked.

Monroe is the smallest school in a region that’s becoming increasing strong and competitive in football. While dropping back into 8-AAA, where it had resided since 1978, won’t ensure a turnaround, a change of address can’t hurt.

Social Circle (4-5, 3-2) at Athens Academy (6-3, 3-2)

Its goal of earning a home game for the first round of the playoffs wash dashed in a stunning lopsided loss to Commerce last Friday, Social Circle finds itself in the familiar position of battling for third place in Region 8-A.

Since winning the region in 2005, the Redskins have finished fourth in the league the past three seasons.

While the third seed still has to travel, they’ll avoid facing a region champ in the first round.

Athens Academy has dominated the series with Social Circle. The Redskins have beaten the Spartans just once in the past 14 years. Athens has won the past three games by a combined score of 106-15.

The Spartans knocked the Redskins out of third place last year with a 34-3 win.
