G-Braves playoff tickets on sale

Published September 7, 2009

LAWRENCEVILLE — Tickets are on sale for the Gwinnett Braves’ first trip to the International League playoffs.

The Braves clinched a spot Saturday with Pawtucket’s defeat of Syracuse. Gwinnett won the wild card and will face IL North champion Scranton-Wilkes Barre when the best-of-five first-round playoff series begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Gwinnett (80-63) closes the regular season with a 2 p.m. Monday game against Charlotte (67-75).

Individual playoff tickets for games Wednesday and Thursday are available through gwinnettbraves.com, at the Gwinnett Stadium box office, through all TicketMaster outlets or by calling 800-745-3000.

Fans who buy tickets to the Governors’ Cup playoff games get first priority to buy tickets for the G-Braves’ 2010 opening weekend.

Gwinnett, the first-year Class AAA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, will be facing the New York Yankees’ AAA team in the playoffs. Scranton-Wilkes Barre won the season series with Gwinnett, 5-3.

The Braves had a four-game lead in the South Division after a 10-5 win over Charlotte on Aug. 23, but six losses in the next seven games allowed Durham to clinch the division.

Durham will play West Division champion Louisville in the other Governors’ Cup first-round series. The championship series will begin Sept. 15, and the IL champion will play the Pacific Coast League champion on Sept. 22 in the Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game in Oklahoma City.

Gwinnett used five pitchers to defeat Charlotte 4-1 Sunday afternoon. Jon Huber (4-0) got the victory, pitching two innings in relief of Jo-Jo Reyes.

Wes Timmons led the Braves’ bats, going 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. He scored twice.

Jason Heyward, considered one of the top prospects in baseball, got his first AAA hits after being called up from AA Mississippi for Saturday’s game.

Heyward, a right fielder, was 2-for-4 Sunday. He drove in Timmons and stole second in the three-run third.

John Van Benschoten (2-8) took the loss for Charlotte. He allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings.

Luis Valdez got his 27th save for Gwinnett after being optioned from Atlanta earlier in the day.

The Braves’ five pitchers teamed to allow just two hits.
